What is RCIA? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process by which people become members of the Roman Catholic church. The process is concerned with the total formation of the person into believing with the Church community. It is often called a “Journey of Faith” because all of us-the unbaptized, Protestant Christians, and Catholic Christians-are at varying stages in our understanding of what Christ has called us to live.
Can I come just to ask questions, without making any commitments? Certainly. The period of inquiry (Precatechumenate) is designed specifically for asking lots of questions, learning, and exploring the Catholic Faith without any obligation to continue. Inquirers meet in parishioner’s homes or at church on a regular basis for discussion and sharing about Catholic Christianity. New inquiry groups begin periodically throughout the year.
What if I decide I want to become a Catholic? If during this period of inquiry, you feel that God is calling you to the Catholic Church, you will be welcomed into the Catechumenate, through the Rite of Acceptance. The Rite of Acceptance is celebrated in September. Once one joins the catechumenate, that person is a member of the Church, although not a fully initiated member. During the Catechumenate, catechumens (unbaptized) and candidates (baptized) celebrate the liturgy of the word each Sunday, study the Catholic Faith, and are formed spiritually through various liturgical rites.
What about attendance? Attendance is required at weekly 9:00 a.m. Sunday Mass, Breaking Open the Word sessions, and the session on the doctrines of the Church, which meets from 10:20 - 11:30 a.m. All of this is scheduled on Sunday mornings with the exception of three retreats on Saturday during this process.
What if I am civilly married, divorced and remarried, or just divorced? If you were civilly married, the Church will bless your marriage. This is known as convalidation. If you were divorced and are now remarried, the church will require an annulment. This will take place during the RCIA process.
If you are divorced but not remarried, no annulment is required unless you later choose to marry.
Who helps me through RCIA? Our RCIA is composed of a large number of parishioners who serve as teachers, coordinators, sponsors, prayer sponsors, and provide hospitality. Sponsors share this journey of faith with you and help you to become an active and vital part of our Catholic family. A suitable sponsor will attend classes and retreats with you and help you to become a part of the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church.
Is there a fee? There is no charge for becoming a member of the Catholic Church.
